SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Illinois State Police (ISP) announced today it continues to investigate the death of Springfield Mayor Timothy J. Davlin. This investigation is a top priority for the ISP, and all necessary resources are being utilized to expedite its completion. Lieutenant Jeff Jacobs is overseeing the investigation being conducted by ISP Zone 4.An autopsy conducted this morning by Sangamon County Coroner Susan Boone's office indicates the cause of death to be "a contact gunshot wound to the chest, apparently self-inflicted." While the cause of death has been determined by the autopsy, the manner of death, which is still unknown will be determined at a coroner's inquest which is yet to be scheduled. Additional investigative work continues which includes, but is not limited to, additional interviews, ballistics examination, computer evidence recovery, and fingerprint and telephone analyses. Upon completion, the investigative case file will be provided to the coroner for use in the inquest process.
Until the coroner's inquest has determined the manner of death and the case is closed, no additional information regarding the investigation will be made available.
. The Davlin family remains in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
