Fatal Crash on I-64 Eastbound in Fairview Heights


FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, IL – The Illinois State Police (ISP), District 11, is currently investigating a fatal traffic crash that occurred on I-64 eastbound at milepost 13 (Fairview Heights).  

At approximately 9:38 a.m. a passenger car struck a truck mounted attenuator (TMA) that was attached to the rear of a construction vehicle.  The construction vehicle was parked on the inside shoulder of I-64.  

A total of five people, all males, were involved in the crash.  Two construction workers were air lifted, and one was transported by ground, to St. Louis University Hospital.  One construction worker was transported to Barnes-Jewish Hospital and the driver of the passenger car was transported to Memorial Hospital in Belleville.  One of the four construction workers later died due to the injuries he received.

All of the construction workers were on or near the TMA when it was struck.

I-64 eastbound was closed from the time of the crash to approximately 2:30 p.m.  All lanes are now open.

Illinois State Police Crash Reconstruction Officers responded to the scene and the investigation is ongoing.
