COLLINSVILLE, IL – On March 16, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. the Illinois State Police, District 11 and Zone 6, held their annual Awards Ceremony. Awards were given by the Illinois Department of Transportation and Illinois State Police to officers for their efforts in making area roadways safer. Service pins were awarded to employees for their years of service to the Illinois State Police. Certificates of recognition and "Saved by the Safety Belt" awards were also presented. Below is a list of the awards.

Illinois Department of Transportation awards – Presented by Richard Allan, Law Enforcement Liaison with the Illinois Department of Transportation, Division of Traffic Safety.

• Alcohol impaired drivers are annually responsible for a significant number of personal injury and loss of life traffic crashes. The following officers received achievement awards based on the number of total career arrests they have made for driving under the influence (DUI).

• Aggressive traffic enforcement and promoting the increased use of seatbelts on Illinois roadways results in the saving of lives and prevention of injuries due to traffic crashes. The following officers received achievement awards for reaching 2,000 arrests for seat belt violations or speeding.

Illinois State Police District 11 awards – Presented by Lieutenant Brad Parsons, Interim Commander, Lieutenant Steve Waggoner, Administrative Officer, and Master Sergeant Chris Trame, Interim Operations Officer.

• Illinois State Police District 11 is responsible for keeping roadways in Monroe, Clinton, Bond, St. Clair, and Madison counties safe for motorists. Enforcement of state laws and federal regulations assists in providing for safer roadways. The following officers received awards for their enforcement efforts during the 2010 calendar year.
Trooper D. Cullen – 55 DUI arrests.
Trooper J. Randolph – 87 alcohol arrests.
Trooper J. Leckrone – 497 occupant restraint arrests.
Trooper D. Moore – 1,622 total activity (citations and warnings).
Trooper D. Moore – 1,133 speed arrests.
Trooper S. Dannenbrink – 309 criminal arrests.
Trooper W. Owen – 126 Motor Carrier Safety (MCS) inspections.
(non-Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer).
Trooper B. Ropac – 917 MCS inspections.
(Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer).

• The following individuals were presented with "Saved by the Safety Belt" awards. "Saved by the Safety Belt" is a statewide program to increase awareness of the lifesaving value of safety belts through public recognition of individuals who survived traffic crashes because they were properly buckled up. All certificates and awards are obtained with federal highway safety funds provided to the Illinois Department of Transportation-Division of Traffic Safety by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

• Departmental Recognition – Presented by Commander S. Abbott
o A Certificate of Recognition was presented to Telecommunicator Specialist Judith Feig for going above and beyond her normal duties. Though she was provided very little information, Telecommunicator Feig was able to locate the address and assist with the safe return of a possible Alzheimer's patient.
o A Certificate of Recognition was presented to Special Agent Sean King. Special Agent King rekindled a stale case involving a brutally violent incident. His exceptional investigative and interviewing skills eventually led to the arrest of Keith Recklein for Aggravated Criminal Sexual Assault. Recklein was later convicted and sentenced to 50 years in the Department of Corrections.
o A Certificate of Recognition was presented to members of the Illinois State Police Motorcycle Enforcement Bureau (MEB) for their contributions to speed limit compliance, reduction of fatalities, and enforcement of the "Fatal Five." During four years of patrol MEB officers issued 201,386 citations, recorded 179 Driving Under the Influence arrests, and made 1,282 criminal arrests. Traffic crash fatalities decreased to a record level during the same four year period. The following officers received a Certificate of Recognition:

• Special Recognition – District 11 – Presented by Lieutenant Brad Parsons, Interim District Commander.
o A Certificate of Recognition was presented to Mr. Matthew Gehrs, Manager of the Collinsville Walmart. For many years Walmart has provided assistance to the Illinois State Police by providing their facility, equipment, and manpower. Walmart's continuing assistance is an asset to the Illinois State Police's commitment of enforcing the laws of the State of Illinois in removing criminal activity.
o A Certificate of Recognition was presented to Mr. Ron Shownes, Law Enforcement Coordinator for the U.S. Attorney's Office. Mr. Shownes has been invaluable in his assistance to District 11 and Zone 6. He demonstrates excellence and inspires other to perform at their best. His professional skills and devotion to duty reflects the highest credit upon the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Southern District of Illinois.
