Narrative: Unit #2 had been traveling northbound on Interstate 55, and
came to a stop in traffic at milepost 35.8 in the left lane, behind Unit
#3. Unit #1 was traveling northbound on Interstate 55 approaching Unit #2.
Unit #1 was unable to stop in time, and swerved left to avoid a collision.
Unit #1 went into the median and went out of control. Unit #1 went back to
the right and sideswiped Unit #2, and then rear ended Unit #3. Three
children passengers (ages 13-16) in Unit #1 were not wearing their
seatbelts, and were ejected from the vehicle and seriously injured. These
three children were flown to Childrens Hosptial in St. Louis via ARCH
Helicopters. The driver of Unit #3 was seriously injured, and a 12 year
old passenger in Unit #3 had minor injuries. These two individuals were
transported to Staunton Community Hospital via ambulance.


Interstate 55 Northbound at the crash location was shut down for
approximately 1 hour due to the crash.


Driver of Unit #1, Morrissey, was issued traffic complaints for Failure To
Reduce Speed To Avoid A Crash, and Failure To Secure Child In Child
Restraint Device.

* The public is reminded that criminal defendants are presumed innocent
until the government is able to prove its charges in court beyond a
reasonable doubt.
