Illinois State Police to Use Automated Traffic Enforcement Systems in Construction Zones.

COLLINSVILLE, IL – Captain Brad Parsons, District 11 Commander, announces the use of automated traffic enforcement systems in construction zones.  Photo speed enforcement vans are currently being deployed in work zones in the Metro-East area and will continue to be throughout the construction season.

The fully marked white photo enforcement vans are equipped with the latest in photo radar technology designed to record the speed of vehicles and to capture clear images of the driver and the license plate of the offending vehicle.

The photo enforcement van will be used in work zones when workers are present.  There are no restrictions on the time of day the van will be used.  The photo speed enforcement van will be used throughout the construction season and signs will be present warning motorists of the use of the photo enforcement van.

Captain Parsons stated, “We use the photo enforcement van to help make construction zones safer for the workers and motorists traveling through the zones.”

First time offenders face a $375 fine and second time offenders face a $1,000 fine.  If the second violation occurs within two years of the first violation your driver’s license could be suspended for 90 days.  Tickets are issued by certified mail to the drivers.

Motorists are also reminded that the use of cell phones in construction zones is illegal.  When traveling through construction zones motorists should slow down, put the phone down, and pay attention to the road.

Illinois State Police Announces Upcoming Roadside Safety Checks

COLLINSVILLE, IL – Captain Brad Parsons, District 11 Commander, announced today that the Illinois State Police may conduct Roadside Safety Checks (R.S.C) in St. Clair or Madison counties during the month of July.

A roadside safety check is an effective tool for generating voluntary compliance by the motoring public.  The potential to come across these checks encourages motorists to arrange designated drivers, keep their consumption of alcohol within the allowable limits, or not drive a motor vehicle after drinking.  Safety checks are designed to keep our roads safe by taking dangerous DUI offenders off the road.

Across the country, an average of one alcohol-related traffic death occurs every 45 minutes.   Alcohol and drug impairment are significant factors in over 40 percent of all fatal motor vehicle crashes in Illinois.  Each year in Illinois, hundreds of lives are lost in alcohol-related crashes.  Don’t risk losing your license, your car, and your freedom.  If you drive impaired, law enforcement will arrest you.

Officers working the R.S.C. will also be watchful for drivers who are operating vehicles in an unsafe manner, driving with a suspended or revoked driver’s license, and transporting open alcoholic beverages.

This Roadside Safety Check is funded through a grant from the United States Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  The grant is administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation, Division of Traffic Safety.

Illinois State Police Urges Motorists to Drive Safe and Avoid the Fatal Four

COLLINSVILLE, IL – In an effort to reduce the increasing number of fatal traffic crashes, Captain Brad Parsons, District 11 Commander, would like to remind Metro-East motorists to avoid the Fatal Four.

The ISP identifies the Fatal Four most common traffic violations as speeding, driving under the influence, failure to wear seat belts, and distracted driving.

The National Safety Council reports motor-vehicle deaths are up 11% nation-wide in the first four months of 2012.  Illinois is also seeing an increase in motor-vehicle deaths.

Illinois’ roadways have seen a 21% increase in traffic fatalities in 2012.  There have been 73 more fatalities from traffic crashes this year than from the same time last year.  Illinois roadways have seen 373 fatal crashes resulting in 411 deaths so far this year.

In the Metro-East (Bond, Clinton, Madison, Monroe, and St. Clair counties) there has been 33 fatal crashes resulting in 38 deaths.  Fatalities resulting from crashes are up 11% here in the Metro-East.

“I would rather see more voluntary compliance than hand out more citations,” stated Captain Parsons.   “We all need to do our part to prevent fatal traffic crashes.  We need to buckle up, slow down, and don’t drive distracted or intoxicated,” he continued.

In an effort to reduce fatalities, the Illinois State Police continues to use enforcement activities and educational programs aimed at educating individuals on safe driving habits.  Any organization that would like to schedule a safe driving presentation should contact Trooper Michael Link at 618.346.3524.

Illinois State Police District 11 Announces Monthly Activity for May

COLLINSVILLE, IL – Illinois State Police District 11 Commander, Captain Brad Parsons, has announced District 11 enforcement figures and activity for May 2012.

Illinois State Police District 11 Troopers issued 2,592 citations, 1,405 written warnings, and made 130 criminal arrests during the month of May.  Speeding accounted for 1,011 citations and 634 citations were issued for occupant restraint violations.

Troopers investigated 226 traffic crashes, assisted 727 motorists, and conducted 196 commercial vehicle inspections, 33 of which were placed out-of-service for safety reasons.  There were 22 arrests made for driving under the influence and 83 other citations issued for alcohol related violations.

District 11, which encompasses Bond, Clinton, Madison, Monroe, and St. Clair counties, experienced twelve traffic crash fatalities in May.

According to the National Safety Council the major contributing factors to motor-vehicle deaths in the United States are lack of occupant protection, alcohol, speeding, young drivers, distractions, and large trucks.

In an effort to reduce fatalities, the Illinois State Police uses enforcement activities and educational programs to fight these major contributing factors.
